On the evening of Sunday July 21st, Instow Beach in North Devon was the peaceful backdrop for “Floating Bye,” a touching and uplifting event that brought the community together in remembrance and celebration.
“Floating Bye” is an annual event organised by the North Devon Hospice to offer a unique and heartfelt way for people to remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones. Held on the picturesque Instow Beach in North Devon, the event brings together the community in a serene and reflective setting.
At 7pm, three gigs participated in this special occasion, each contributing to a memorable display of support and solidarity.
The centrepiece of “Floating Bye” is a beautifully handcrafted willow structure mounted on a raft, where participants place flowers and messages dedicated to those they have lost. The raft, decorated with the tributes, is towed across the water, creating a poignant visual display of remembrance. This year, the raft was towed by Barnstaple and escorted by two Torridge gigs, adding a ceremonial touch to the proceedings.

Robyn from The North Devon Hospice expressed deep gratitude to all involved, stating, “I want to say a huge thank you to each of you for generously giving your time to row on Sunday. It was a truly beautiful evening—you helped create a very special occasion for so many people. We have received such wonderful comments and feedback about the event, and seeing the rowers raise the oars so beautifully and ceremoniously on the water was deeply moving. Thank you!”
“Floating Bye” has become a cherished tradition, highlighting the hospice’s dedication to offering comfort and a space for shared remembrance, while also showcasing the generous spirit of the North Devon community.
The event was a poignant reminder of the power of community and the impact of coming together to honour and remember those who have touched our lives.
