The second Seaford Bay Regatta took place in East Sussex on June 29th, hosted collaboratively by Affinity Rowing Club, Lewes Pilot Gig Club, and Newhaven Gig Rowing Club.
The event saw participation from clubs including London Cornish, Thames Barbarians, West London, a combined team from Rowhedge and Tudor, the Coastal Rowing Academy, and an ‘All-Stars’ crew featuring rowers from Lewes, Langstone, and Eastney.
Despite the logistical challenge of a boat breaking down en route, the event kicked off smoothly. By 9:45AM, boats were launched, participants were well-fed, and the races commenced.
Newhaven’s bustling port added to the excitement, with ferries, fishing boats, and aggregate freight navigating the waters alongside the competing rowers. Seven races took place over a 2.4km kite-shaped course, including Men’s, Women’s, Mixed, and a Challenge race for novice rowers on a shorter 1.5km course.
Affinity Rowing Club dominated the day, winning Men’s A, Women’s A, Mixed A, and the Challenge races. They also took home the prestigious Golden Pin trophy, a unique award inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi, symbolising triumph and resilience.

Looking Ahead: The Head of the Ouse
Mark your calendars for September 7th, when the three East Sussex clubs come together once again to host the Head of the Ouse. This event features two races along the picturesque Sussex Downs and the Ouse between Lewes and Newhaven. Open to all types of fixed-seat rowing craft, the Head of the Ouse promises to be a spectacular event, attracting a diverse array of boats including Bursledon, Triple and St Ayles Skiffs, Celtic and Pembrokeshire Longboats, and cutters.
