The police are rowing for charity

0

A group of policemen are rowing the route of the Great River Race, which is 21 miles from Millwall Dock down to Ham House in Richmond. This will take place a week after the official Great River Race.

Some of the team are currently or about to become members of London Cornish Pilot Gig Club and two are also Cornish! There are many novices in this team and their first training session is not until 22nd June.

The rowers are all serving or very recently serving ex-police officers:

DC Al Allen – Met Officer and a Cornishman.

PC Rich James  – Met police Officer. Some previous rowing experience and a fellow Cornishman.

DC Dec Wilson – Met Police Officer. He is also running the New York Marathon, to raise money for the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund, this year.

DC Marc Parkinson – Met Police Officer with no rowing experience.

Ex-PC Rich Wilson – until recently an Essex Police Officer, who has embarked on a new career. No rowing experience.

PS Sarah Kelly – Our only Sergeant on the crew. She’s done an open row but no other rowing experience.

PC Shaun Brown – Met Police officer. Not a rower & not a fan of water!

The Coxswain is Phil Pring. Phil is running training sessions for the crew & coxing the row. He’s also a member of LCPGC and a very experienced Thames coxswain, with a great deal of experience. LCPGC are kindly providing their fibre glass gig, ‘ansome’ for the row along with the Metropolitan Police Marine Policing Unit providing the safety support.

The team is raising money for Care of Police Survivors (COPS). It is a charity that assists the families of police officers who lose their lives on duty. It is run by Survivors with the aim to assist Survivors in any way they need. The founders are a retired officer & the widow of a Glasgow Officer, who was murdered in 1994. See the link below for the charity.
