On a bright and sunny Saturday July 20th, Langstone Pilot Gig Club hosted their much-anticipated annual regatta. The event was graced by local clubs including the Eastney Cruising Association and the Coastal Rowing Academy, as well as neighboring clubs from Newhaven, Brightlingsea UCSC, Bridport, Poole, and Weymouth.
With a challenging schedule dictated by the tide, the regatta featured nine races, all of which needed to be completed between 8:45 AM and 2:00 PM. Thanks to efficient changeovers, the racing proceeded on time, providing an action-packed day for both participants and spectators.
The atmosphere was vibrant as rowers and supporters reveled in the excellent weather, enjoying a tasty BBQ, an array of homemade cakes, and refreshing beer after the races.
The results of the regatta saw Weymouth emerging victorious, securing the first-place position. The host club, Langstone, proudly took second place, while Poole clinched the third spot on the podium.
All winning crews were awarded with unique, handmade trophies crafted by Langston’s own Bex and Verity. These distinctive trophies were created from recycled beach treasures, adding a special touch to the victories.
Reflecting on the victory, AJ from Weymouth expressed: “It was a great day for the club to showcase the number of competitive rowers and up and coming rowers from both U25s as well as Men’s and Women’s squad. It’s been a long time coming, but Weymouth is finally winning the trophies that we deserve. We plan on keeping this momentum going into the rest of the season.”
