The Cornish County Gig Championships take place in Newquay each September. The women racing over a weekend two weeks before the men’s event. In 2014 there were over 90 crews entered into each Championship.
Clubs row in randomly selected gigs (approx 14 of which are donated by clubs for use over each weekend). Two rounds of heats are held on the Saturday whilst the Quarter Finals, Semis and Finals are run on the Sunday.
The racing takes place on the harbourside of the town and is based around the Newquay Rowing Club’s own headquarters. It’s always a popular regatta location, with good views of the course from the harbour wall, and with shelter and a family-friendly atmosphere on the beach-side and gig launching area.
Although they are the Cornish County Championships, clubs from all over the country (& beyond) are welcome and the events are seen as the culmination of a summer’s rowing and the second most important calendar event of the year after the World Championships.
