Enhancing Performance Through Mindset Coaching: A Guide For Gig Rowers

0

I am Becky Lloyd King of FERN Coaching and Mentoring based in Cornwall. In my work I have learned that whilst physical strength and endurance are vital to sporting success, mindset is the key to unlocking peak performance. A strong mental approach helps manage nerves, enhance teamwork, and foster growth. With the World Pilot Gig Championships 2025 ahead, here are essential mindset strategies to help you perform at your best.

Preparing for Success: Building a Strong Mental Foundation

Success starts long before race day. Strengthening your mindset through mental preparation can boost confidence and focus.

  • Team Unity Through Open Communication
A strong crew isn’t just about physical power; it’s about trust and teamwork. Openly discussing ideas, concerns, and feedback fosters collaboration and ensures everyone feels valued. A unified team translates to greater cohesion on the water.
  • Positive Visualisation
Picture yourself executing perfect strokes, in sync with your crew, building boat speed, and performing with precision. Engaging in this practice, individually and as a team, builds confidence and sets you for success.
  • Affirmations for Mental Strength
Repeating positive affirmations like “I am strong and focused” or “We are ready to race,” shifts your mindset toward success.  As cheesy as it seems, your personal story and internal narrative is really influential on outcomes. Combining affirmations with breathwork and visualisation reinforces belief in your abilities.
  • Focus on Process, Not Just Outcomes
While winning may well be the ultimate goal, focusing on technique, pacing, and teamwork reduces anxiety and keeps you present. Celebrating training, gym sessions, and team bonding makes the journey just as valuable as the race itself and is where the personal growth actually happens!

Managing Nerves on Race Day: Staying Calm and Focused

Nerves are natural but can be harnessed for peak performance.

  • Breathing Techniques
Deep, diaphragmatic breathing calms the nervous system. Try five-by-five square breathing: inhale for 5 seconds, hold for 5, exhale for 5, hold for 5. Practicing this in training makes it second nature on race day.
  • Pre-Race Routine
Establishing a consistent warm-up, stretching, or music routine provides a sense of control and familiarity, helping you stay focused.
  • Present-Moment Focus
Instead of worrying about results, direct your attention to technique, crew coordination, and rhythm. As the saying goes—eyes in the boat!

Post-Race Reflection: Learning and Growing

Reflection is crucial for continuous improvement and emotional well-being.

  • Acknowledge Your Emotions
Whether elated or disappointed, allow yourself to process emotions without letting them define you.
  • Constructive Reflection
Ask yourself and your crew: What went well? What could be improved? Identifying strengths and areas for growth fuels future success.
  • Celebrate Every Achievement
Success isn’t just about winning. Recognise mini victories—whether it’s a strong start, great teamwork, or executing a strategy well. Remember, you either win or learn!
  • Prioritise Recovery
Mental recovery is just as vital as physical recovery. Take time to relax, spend time with your VIPs, and reset before diving back into training.

Conclusion: Unlocking Potential Through Mindset

Mindset coaching is a powerful tool for rowers aiming to enhance performance, manage nerves, and grow as athletes – whatever the goal! By adopting strategies like visualisation, affirmations, and reflective practices, you can build resilience, confidence, and a winning mentality.

At FERN Coaching and Mentoring, I believe success starts in the mind—whether in sport, career, or life.
