In the clammy heat at lunchtime today, 8 rowers and a cox set off from Cawsand to row around Drakes Island and onwards to Torpoint, passing many different vessels on the open waves.
Some of the crew haven’t been rowing that long and equipped themselves admirably to tackle the long 5 mile row.
Amazing views of the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, a packed Armed Forces day on Plymouth Hoe, Mount Edgcumbe Park and Drakes Island helped distract the rowers along with waves and shouts of encouragement from passing craft.
The first crew made it to Torpoint at 2:30pm (after several drink stops) ready for a changeover for the return trip. The second crew had to negotiate an exclusion zone put in place for the air display with said Armed Forces Day.
On passing Cremyll, a diversion into Barn Pool became necessary due to RFA Fort Victoria entering and with a myriad of craft on the water to get ring side seats for the red arrows, due at 5:30pm.
After some race training and the encircling of Drakes Island we headed out towards the QE and turned back to face Cawsand just in time to see the Battle of Britain show ahead of the arrows. They finally appeared and gave us a superb display, flying close by and overhead several times, producing gasps and camera phone clicks galore.
A very tired crew headed into Cawsand after, although smiling and joking.
5 miles (plus a few for race training and time wasting) in increasing wind and blazing sunshine had made for a few rosy faces. Cue the fab pics and the link for donations to the club and Cornwall Air Ambulance. What a fab way to say Goodbye to our hire gig Korev (and we passed a Christchurch yacht on the way in to Cawsand Beach too which is where she is heading). A glorious day!
