Torpoint Rowing Club started of by hiring rowing boats to get novices starting rowing. This is harder than it sounds. The club then managed to secure the hire of Korev a glass reinforced plastic gig from Cornwall Pilot Gig Association. Sadly after 2 years they have to now say goodbye to Korev.
Since starting they have managed to fundraise to buy Lantic a former Fowey boat, the club managed to raise the money thanks to secured grants from Torpoint Town Council, and Sport England, and along with their own funds.
The team continues to go from strength to strength and they welcome new members of all abilities and ages to come and give gig rowing a go!
Torpoint Rowing Club now are aiming to raise enough money to purchase their own glass reinforced plastic gig.
The club are doing this charity row for two reasons, one being a way to celebrate the positive impact having Korev has had on the team and promoting the relationships between local gig clubs and the Cornish community in general. The second being able to give half of the total to the Cornwall Air Ambulance.
Due to the very nature of the sport, some of the regattas are held in inaccessible places and any gig rower in distress may one day need rescuing and we are aware of the increasing visibility of the helicopter in our skies. The charity are currently raising money for a second helicopter. In the first 6 months of this year the one and only helicopter has attended 418 incidents.
With your support not only can you ensure that an inclusive, and welcoming gig club for all ages and abilities continues to evolve and thrive helping local people get involved in one of the fastest growing sports in the country, but also that our local people and welcomed visitors to the area can enjoy our beautiful county safely.
The charity row will be held on 29th June 2019 and will be a row from Torpoint to Cawsand and back.
