About
This year will see the start of a new ranking system for race categories throughout the regatta season. This will be for official CPGA regattas only (excluding WPGC & County Champs), so those that will be on the CPGA calendar, and the clubs record results in the required format. Note: Any races that are run in heats and not timed will not be included as this will not be a fair reflection.
The boffins at Gigrower have come up with an algorithm that takes in different scoring factors to give crews an overall points score to reflect their form and results at regattas throughout a season. This is the first version to be released for this season – this may change for forthcoming seasons as we continue to develop.
Every crew that lines up at a race is given a 100 points, then from here depending on the factors of the race will end up with a final points score for that race. The following factors are calculated;
- Regatta Difficulty Level – i.e. how many clubs turn up to the regatta
- Race Difficulty – How many boats are in your race. i.e. if one A race at a regatta has 10 boats, and another has 5, getting a better result in the 10 boat race will score more points
- Race winners – bonus points are allocated to those who win a race
- Number of races attended
- World Pilot Gig Championship Ranking
All factors are then averaged across all regattas attended to give your ‘score’
Other points to note:
- To be eligible for the final ranking standings, crews will need to have attended at least 3 regattas
- If races are joined together, i.e. u14 and u16s – unless the results are recorded separately then they will not be included
- Regattas that run two heats, unless the heats are timed to give an official finishing position, will not be included. I.e. Rock & Fowey from 2018. We encourage clubs to make sure they time the heats to make it fair for all clubs
- All rankings from the weekend’s regattas will be updated on the following Tuesday
- The winners of each category will be announced at the end of season CPGA event
- This is a trial for this kind of system, please be patient and if there is anything you wish to ask please do!
