About: Barnstaple Pilot gig Club is a community based rowing club that is open to anyone who wishes to row Pilot Gigs either socially or competitively.Barnstaple Pilot Gig Club was founded in January 2010 by a small group of keen gig rowers who felt it was about time Barnstaple had its own pilot gig club to make use of a rarely used stretch of water. After founding the club a training gig was purchased to enable potential new Barnstaple members to get a taste of the sport and begin on water training, This created a large amount of interest and within 12 months the club had over 50 members.
It seems similar to many other areas, Barnstable people find once they have had a taste of gig rowing they are addicted to the sport and now 5 years on the club has 4 gigs and over 120 members with a well established junior section and are slowly working hard on improving within competitive events in the gig calendar. The club also maintains a strong social rowing section for those who prefer to enjoy the rowing rather than the competition.
Barnstaple also held its first ever regatta this year in glorious weather at the end of November (its original date was cancelled in august due to hurricane bertha!) with 6 clubs in attendance for the sprint races. The regatta was a great success and we are looking forward to a repeat event this year.
