Thanks to Anna Cosh for this regatta report.
Saturday 11th October saw Barnstaple Pilot Gig Club’s annual regatta – the Barum 1Miler.
With 8 boats on the River Taw, 7 clubs raced for the all-important top spot. The Taw saw racing from Open and Women’s crews across Senior, Vets and Super Vets categories plus Mixed Masters and Juniors, including Under 14’s and Under 16’s.

Crews raced around a 1 mile course from Tea-By-The-Taw Café down river, under Barnstaple’s New Bridge, around two tight buoy turns and back up river to the finish at Castle Quay. The course saw some tight races with a few friendly clashes here and there on the first 120o turn as crews worked hard against a strong tide and minimal wind.
Back on shore, Barnstaple Pilot Gig Club members had a BBQ, and a cake stand on hand to help crews fuel for their upcoming races. A raffle was managed by some of the Barum Blades (BPGC’s Junior section) which was later drawn after the racing and presentation of trophies was complete – well done to those who won!
