Torridge Pilot Gig Club, based on the Torridge Estuary in Appledore, North Devon, is celebrating 20 years of rowing. To mark the milestone, the club is aiming to raise £35,000 to fund a brand-new Cornish Pilot Gig, a traditional wooden boat built from elm by a skilled Cornish boatbuilder.
The new gig, a successor to the club’s original Will-to-Win, will be a lasting legacy for the club and the wider community, offering more opportunities for people of all ages to get on the water and enjoy this iconic local sport. Club members have already pledged £5,000 from their own funds, and a series of fundraisers is underway to reach the full target.
One standout initiative comes from club member Ruth, who has taken on a remarkable challenge despite a recent congenital heart defect diagnosis. Between 1 October and Christmas, Ruth is aiming to row 250km on a rowing machine, training at her allowed heart rate and gathering sponsorship along the way.
Ruth said, “Being told I couldn’t compete was tough, but this challenge has given me a reason to train again. Every metre rowed and every pound raised brings our club closer to a new wooden boat – and more people on the water enjoying gig rowing.”
Already, Ruth is well on her way, having covered 120km just weeks into the challenge. Friends, fellow rowers, and supporters have joined her for sessions, sponsored her efforts, and shared her story, all helping Torridge Pilot Gig Club move closer to its 2026 dream.
Alongside Ruth’s incredible effort, Angie, one of the club’s talented members, has designed beautiful calendars and Christmas cards to boost fundraising, while Chris, has launched a ‘Hundred Club’ raffle that sold out within days. It’s very much a whole-club effort, with everyone pulling together to make the new Will-to-Win a reality.
