On 20th September, over 2,000 competitors will take on the 21.6-mile challenge from East London to Richmond, battling tides, testing endurance, and soaking in the spectacular views of the Thames.
Entries officially open on 1st April for this legendary race which attracts a diverse mix of competitors, from novices taking on their first major challenge to athletes looking to smash personal records. The event isn’t just about competition—many crews embrace the fun spirit of the day by donning creative fancy dress and raising funds for their chosen charities. In 2024, over 30 charities benefited from crews rowing for a cause, cheered on by thousands of spectators lining London’s iconic bridges and riverbanks.
The Great River Race is open to all traditional fixed-seat rowing boats powered by a minimum of four oars, with each crew carrying a cox and a passenger—a nod to the heritage of London’s Watermen, the original river taxi service before bridges spanned the Thames. While the ultimate goal for many is simply to complete the course, the fastest boat overall will claim the prestigious Challenge Trophy of the Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames.
Last year’s event filled the river with a riot of colour, with 270 crews taking part, showcasing an impressive variety of traditional rowing boats. Among the 69 Cornish Pilot Gigs that participated was Padstow Rowing Club’s Dasher, a 36-year-old wooden gig making a triumphant return after restoration. Many crews, like Torridge Pilot Gig Club, also embraced the race’s fun spirit, dressing up as crabs while still achieving impressive race times.
Additionally, Caradon Pilot Gig Club recorded the fastest male crew (not on handicap), while Bristol Gig Club secured the title of fastest female crew (not on handicap).
Undoubtedly, Cornish Pilot Gigs will continue to demonstrate their speed and the tenacity of their crews at the 2025 Great River Race.
