A Day At The Tamar Winter League

Thanks to Alex from Coxside Gig Club who shared his day with us!

As someone who loves a good winter rowing challenge, I was thrilled to take part in the revived Tamar Winter League. Thanks to the efforts of Caradon, this fantastic series was back on the calendar, bringing clubs together in a true celebration of our sport. Caradon set the standard with the first fixture in December, and now the baton had been passed to a collaboration of clubs; Cattewater, RMA and Coxside Gig Club for the second instalment—hosted at the Royal Western Yacht Club, Queen Anne’s Battery.

From the moment I arrived, it was clear we were in for a great day. Coxside’s clubhouse, with its stunning waterside views, ample parking, and fantastic facilities—including showers, toilets, and even a 24/7 gym for pre-race warmups—made for a brilliant venue. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as rowers from various clubs gathered, ready to test their mettle on the water.

And what a day we had! The sun graced us with its presence, and a gentle offshore breeze kept conditions ideal for racing. A new trial course featuring dual turn gates was introduced—something that had everyone talking. Inspired by SailGP, these dual turn buoys ensured a collision-free race and kept competition tight going into the pivotal 180-degree turn. It was exhilarating! The start and finish lines were positioned right in front of the clubhouse, providing a prime viewing spot for spectators, who cheered us on as we powered through the course.

Beyond the thrill of racing, what stood out most was the atmosphere between clubs. Coxside learnt a great deal from experienced club members from Cattewater and RMA, and by working together we all put on a fantastic day. Their shared experience and teamwork made for a smooth, friendly, and well-organised competition that everyone could enjoy.

Looking ahead, we’re all gearing up for the grand finale of this year’s league—the “Battle on the Border” at Queen Anne’s Battery, Plymouth on Sunday, 23rd February. The enthusiasm from all participating clubs has been incredible, and with momentum building, the future of the Tamar Winter League looks bright. A special shoutout to Coxside for generously donating a trophy, which will be passed on in future years.

If you’re up for some fast-paced, friendly winter racing, don’t miss out! See you on the water for the final showdown!
