I moved to Cornwall 10 years ago to work as a vet and first learned about gig rowing through my parents, who had joined Rock Rowing Club. Suddenly their Facebook profiles were filled with incredible photos of rowing by day and dancing on the tables of the Mermaid by night! I thought, ‘what is this sport!? I’ve got to give it a try!’.
I instantly fell in love with the sport when I joined Rock Rowing Club. My first experience of the World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly was unforgettable – my Dad coxed my boat, and my Mum was next door in the rival boat! I met my (now) husband that weekend at the Mermaid, and the rest is history; I was hooked. When I moved further south, I joined Falmouth Gig Club. I spent several incredible years there training with a fantastic crew and the late (legendary) Penny Chuter. We were runners up in 2018 and became World Champions in 2019!
I have always pursued painting as a hobby to relax and to make gifts for friends and family. I first started painting gigs as a cox’s present. This quickly turned into more orders from friends. When I eventually launched my first collection of gig paintings they sold out in 24 hours! I love capturing the bright colours of the different gigs set against the classic turquoise waters of Scilly. I now offer a range of gig rowing original art, fine art prints and greeting cards. The gig rowing prints have been popular, both as gifts for coxswains and as mementos for rowers to remember their weekend of gig rowing. Through my website you can order your print, have it framed and posted to your door- all in one go! All the items are made and framed in Cornwall.

I have recently started upcycling old gig rowing oars and transforming them into unique pieces of art. I’m currently taking commission orders and can paint your oar in any design to suit your interior. If you’re interested in having a bespoke gig rowing oar created, please contact me at hello@sophiebagnallart.com.
