In June 2023, Bristol Gig Club launched an inspiring initiative called Have A Go Rowing to introduce refugees and asylum seekers to the joys of gig rowing. This two-stage project saw remarkable success, with 16 participants joining the first stage and 17 taking part in the second.
The initiative, supported by a total of 25 enthusiastic volunteer club members, aimed to provide a welcoming space for individuals who have often faced significant challenges in their journey to the UK. By making good use of the camaraderie and teamwork shown so often in gig rowing, the project created not just a sporting opportunity but also a chance for social integration and community building.
A quote from Maria, one of the organisers, sheds light on the origins and spirit of the initiative: “A few of us from Bristol Gig Club have a bit of contact with refugees and asylum seeker support organisations, and many are initially housed in hotels in and around the city centre, within walking distance of the harbour. We wanted to extend a welcome, and give people the opportunity to try out our fantastic sport in a friendly and supportive environment. After support and advice from local charity, Aid Box Community, we started our first taster sessions in May 2023 with each participant being referred by a support worker from various organisations. Eighteen months on we’ve seen people progress into full membership and become enthusiastic and skilled rowers, with one member competing in the London Great River Race this year. Our regular Saturday row is a highlight of the week for lots of us, laughter and fun on the water with some hard training of course, coffee and chat on dry land, friendships formed.”
The outcomes have been positive, with seven participants since becoming permanent club members, actively taking part in regular rows, training sessions, events, and regattas. This marks a significant step in building an inclusive community within the sport.
The project continued successfully thanks to funding secured through grant applications to local trusts. This support allowed us to purchase additional equipment, provide kit for participating rowers, and cover their travel and regatta expenses, demonstrating how targeted financial backing can foster meaningful community engagement.

“As an asylum seeker in the UK, joining Bristol Gig Club has been a life-changing experience for me. It has served as a vital stepping stone in my mental recovery, offering me a supportive environment to make friends, socialise, and engage in a new sport. The sense of belonging and community I’ve found here has been invaluable. I am especially grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to participate in the Row Pro Men’s training. This has not only helped me grow physically but has also boosted my confidence. I am truly thankful for being part of this wonderful club.”
“I spoke with my husband a few days ago; he is an officer in the Ukrainian army and is fighting now. I told him about the club and the people in it. I told him about my first strokes and efforts, the many smiles and words of encouragement, and my pride in being a member of the club. I told him about the wonderful evening on the boat and the friendly people. He was happy and asked me to send a photo and also expressed gratitude to everyone who supports us and helps us survive a difficult time. Thank you for being there and giving me the opportunity to be part of your big family!”
“For me, it is a pleasure to have joined the Club. I would like to thank you all for your unwavering support towards me. Know that you have contributed to my well-being because the stress and pressure of being an asylum seeker are not easy to manage. Every time God does it, you show your dedication to us. So a big thank you to all those who have contributed directly or indirectly to this initiative for including us in your club. I am delighted to have met everyone and to spend these good times with you.”
