World’s Toughest Row For Looe Rowers

The 2024 edition of the World’s Toughest Row promises to be an unforgettable challenge, and a team of determined gig rowers from Looe are ready to take on this incredible journey, all in support of charity. Harry, Nathaniel, Kim, and Sally of Oars Of Thunder set off on December 11th and have now spent over a week at sea.

This extraordinary race spans more than 3,000 miles across the Atlantic, starting in San Sebastián on La Gomera, Canary Islands, and ending at Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour, Antigua. Kicking off in December, the event draws participants ranging from solo rowers to five-person crews, all tackling the unpredictable open ocean in pursuit of adventure, resilience, and charitable goals.

The World’s Toughest Row is a global platform that serves both personal and charitable missions. Every team has a deep-seated cause, raising awareness and funds for chosen charities. Rowers can support one or more charities close to their hearts, helping to generate critical funding, giving competitors a meaningful purpose and motivation throughout the arduous journey.

Each year, exceptional individuals take on the challenge of rowing across the Atlantic in the World’s Toughest Row. Teams will row more than 1.5 million strokes, facing waves as high as 20 feet and a range of temperatures, from freezing nights to sweltering heat and humidity near the finish line. The physical toll is immense, with rowers burning over 5,000 calories a day, and many losing up to 8kg during the crossing.

As Harry, Sally, Nathaniel, and Kim prepare for the adventure of a lifetime, they’ve dedicated countless hours to training, ensuring they are ready for whatever lies ahead.
