Winter League Kicks Off In Fowey

On the morning of November 9th, River Fowey Gig Club once again hosted the St Austell Bay Winter League, kicking off the new season with exciting races. After last year’s success, crews from Charlestown, Mevagissey, Fowey, and St Goran gathered to test their skills in the first races of the winter series.

The decision to bring back the league was driven by positive feedback, especially from novice rowers, and many clubs returned with new novices eager to race.

This year’s league also aimed to provide a safe environment for developing coxes. Event organiser Jude Osborne shared, “We wanted to create a space for learning and growth, particularly for new coxes. With many clubs struggling to find coxes during the regatta season, these informal races offer a great opportunity to develop skills.”

Despite a bit of drizzle, the enthusiasm of the participants remained high. The friendly atmosphere saw rowers and coxes stepping in to help other clubs, ensuring everyone had a chance to race, regardless of category or experience.

Jude reflected, “It was amazing to see everyone come together, not just for competition but for the joy of being on the water. Standout performances included Becky from Charlestown Rowing Club, Carly from Mevagissey Rowing Club, and Sylvia from St Goran Rowing Club, all new to coxing and each impressing in their debut races.”

Stay tuned for the next race on December 7th!
