Ilfracombe’s 24-Hour Ergathon

On January the 4th, Ilfracombe Pilot Gig Club is embarking on an exciting challenge to raise £6,000 for six Concept 2 rowing machines, a key step in fulfilling a long-standing goal. After recently securing a permanent home at the Larkstone Watersports Hub, the club is now focused on providing its members with year-round training opportunities. The new rowing machines will allow juniors to train during the winter months, help competitive crews build on their successes from last year’s World Pilot Gig Championships, and offer accessible exercise options for recreational members.

To raise the funds, the club is hosting a 24-hour ergathon, with a minimum of four rowing machines in constant use throughout the event. Members will take turns rowing in shifts, with over 30 participants already signed up—led by the women’s squad—and the club is inviting the community to get involved. This event builds on the success of a previous 24-hour row for the MND Association.

The club’s dream of owning its own rowing machines is now closer than ever, thanks to the new boathouse providing the space needed for training. Currently, members often bring their own machines to sessions, but owning six Concept 2 machines will make group training more efficient and accessible to all.

Club members are excited about the impact these machines will have. A competitive squad member shared, “It will be great to have a set of ergs so we can train together—it’s so much harder rowing by yourself. To reach the next level, we need the C2s. We can push each other and improve. No one loves the erg—it’s tough—but it’s a fantastic tool for building fitness and is the closest thing to rowing on the water.

These rowing machines will allow the club to support its members’ development, from complete beginners to seasoned athletes. Ilfracombe Pilot Gig Club is calling on supporters to help turn this dream into a reality. Every donation brings the community one step closer to achieving its goal and ensuring rowing remains accessible for everyone in Ilfracombe.
