On the 6th September, members of the Cattewater Gig Club will embark on an ambitious challenge, rowing 100 kilometers in Plymouth Sound from dusk until dawn. This extraordinary feat aims to raise much-needed funds for two important causes: Plymouth Foodbank and the Cattewater Gig Club itself.
Across the UK, food banks are facing unprecedented demand, with one in five people now living below the poverty line. The Plymouth Foodbank, based at the Oasis Centre in Stonehouse and part of the Trussell Trust network, is no exception. Over the past year, the foodbank has experienced a 45% increase in users, including a staggering 40% who are in full-time employment.
At the same time, donations have dramatically decreased, forcing the foodbank to spend £2,500 each week just to meet the needs of the community. With dwindling resources, this vital service is at serious risk.
All proceeds from the 100k row will be equally divided, with 50% going to Plymouth Foodbank and 50% supporting the Cattewater Gig Club. The funds raised will provide essential support for both the foodbank and the rowing club, ensuring that both can continue their important work in the community.
Maintaining the club’s traditional hand-crafted boats is costly, with the club’s beloved gig, ‘Drake,’ urgently in need of repairs. Additionally, the club has a long-term goal of commissioning a new boat, an endeavor that would secure the future of the club but comes with a hefty price tag of over £30,000.
