Mevagissey Rowing Club took on the challenge of hosting one of the new format Senior Summer Series fixtures on Saturday 22nd June. The event benefited from great conditions with rowers and spectators alike enjoying some sunshine. A 38 gig line up for the start of the women’s seeding race kicked off a non-stop day of racing.
Pentewan Sands proved the ideal setting for the second event of the Senior Summer Series on Saturday 22nd June. The determination of crews to build on their points from the first series event, hosted by Mounts Bay Gig Club, was in evidence as rowers tried to improve against their heat placings achieved two weeks previously.
After a 3km long seeding race, crews progressed to two rounds of 2 kilometre heats. The pace of the racing proved to be testing for participants, particularly those rowers also coxing, who found the race schedule particularly exacting.
CPGA Event Lead, Dylan Jane explained, “We have certainly been learning much from the Senior Summer Series formats we have been triallings so far and are looking forward to drawing on club feedback to shape the forthcoming events.”
Both Caradon A crews got off to a good start, leading both the Women’s and Open seeding races. The Women’s A maintained great form across the races securing the top position and vital points advantage in the Round 2 heats over River Fowey in second place and Coverack in third. In the Open category heats Falmouth proved victorious over Caradon in second place, chased by Looe in third.
Carrie Morris, Chair of Mevagissey Rowing Club said, “It has been some years since the club has attempted to coordinate an event of this magnitude and we were delighted to host so many crews and see so many faces enjoying the day on the water and the shore. We really value the social side of gig rowing so we hope everyone enjoyed the atmosphere of the evening gathering – we certainly had a great time!
