The World Pilot Gig Championships continues to be a highlight of the gig racing season. From the humble beginnings of 19 boats racing traditional Scillonian courses, to the format that we all know and love today, the World Pilot Gig Championships is a huge event that is continually developing.
This year sees the introduction of a new event space – ‘The Park’ – just offset from Holgates Green where a large LED screen will share GigRower Stream Team coverage, films from the ‘Pulling Together the Past’ heritage project and advertisements from local businesses.
The team from the Old Town Inn will also be providing a pop up bar, ensuring spectators can enjoy watching the racing with a drink in hand.
Event organisers have been seeking an alternative viewing space for spectators to enjoy the racing since the closure of Rat Island last year. Developing the space has not been straightforward for Islands Partnership, Event Manager, Anna Mahoney, particularly the logistics of shipping the necessary technologies and personnel to the islands. Anna said,
“It’s been a challenge but hopefully it will be a rewarding experience. We’ve discussed this idea within the partnership team for some time so I’m delighted it’s now become a reality. We are really pleased to have the Old Town Inn team on board and look forward to continuing to develop the event spaces further in the future.”
