Thank you to Anna Koska for providing us with the update on the South Devon Winter League fixture held by Dart Gig Club.
Dart Gig Club hosted this fixture for the South Devon Winter League Series, and were delighted to welcome attending clubs to our new gig shed.
The weather decided to play fair and the river stayed calm, offering everyone great conditions for rowing. Brixham, Teign, Yealm, Paignton, and Salcombe all attended, making for a full day of racing with many spectators supporting from the embankment.
The course included two close buoy turns, resulting in some fairly squeaky moments. It requires nerves of steel from the coxes who had to navigate their way out of bottlenecks!
The results were as follows:
Women’s A – Dart:
Dart, Yealm and Teign lead the group to the first mark. Dart stretched out to a convincing lead on the final leg, leaving Yealm, Teign and Paignton fighting for second and third place. Yealm crossed the line in second ahead of Teign in third, very closely followed by Paignton.
Women’s B – Dart:
An impressive start from all crews meant the group were still together by the first mark. Dart took an impressive lead by the final leg, leaving Yealm and Paignton to battle it out for second and third place, with Teign hot on their heels. Paignton pulled away from Yealm to achieve second place behind Dart who won by two boat lengths.
Women’s Vets – Dart:
Brixham developed a strong lead from the start, with Dart close behind. The rest of the group battled it out for third place. Dart then stormed into first position and kept their lead to the first mark. Dart maintained their lead around both marks, eventually winning the race by a boat length. There was some tough competition for second place as Brixham pipped Salcombe on the finish line. A very exciting race to watch!
Women’s Super Vets – Dart:
This race was a great display of determination from all rowers who took part. Dart showed their dominance in this category, winning by a margin. Brixham followed in second place and Salcombe achieved third.
Mens A – Dart:
Dart had a convincing lead by the first mark, holding off Yealm in second place. Dart continued their lead to the finish line while Yealm and Teign fought for second place. Yealm held onto second place, crossing the finish line behind Dart.
Men’s B – Dart:
Dart secured another victory by putting in a strong performance, crossing the line first ahead of Teign in second and Yealm in third.
Men’s Vets – Teign:
Teign, Salcome and Dart separated the pack on the first leg, making for an exciting turn on the first mark. The real race came on the last leg, between the two leading crews. Teign overtook Salcombe, taking the win by just a second. Another impressive round of racing.
Men’s Supervets – Dart:
Dart took a convincing lead about half way down the first leg. Yealm, Brixham and Salcombe were neck and neck around the first and second mark, causing another close buoy turn. Yealm finished in second with a boat length lead over Salcombe who came third.
Junior’s – Brixham:
This race was an excellent display of junior rowing. Brixham took the lead over Dart and crossed the line in first place.
Mixed Masters – Teign:
Teign and Dart lead the group to the first mark, with Salcombe close behind. Teign stretched out to a boat length lead over Dart by the second mark, leaving Brixham and… tangled up in a clash. Dart quickly gained on Teign as they headed towards the finish but weren’t able to catch Teign who crossed the line first place.
Novice – Dart:
Dart continued their winning streak in the Novice category by finishing in first place. Salcombe and Dart B also gave great performances, placing second and third.
Overall Results:
1st Dart 15 Points
2nd Salcombe 40 Points
3rd Teign 42 Points
3rd Yealm 42 Points
5th Brixham 45 Points
6th Paignton 54 Points.
