Portland Gig Rowing Club had an incredible opportunity to attend a private screening of the new film “The Boys in The Boat,” based on the 2013 book by Daniel James Brown. The film recounts the astonishing true story of the 1936 American men’s eight as they work towards the Berlin Olympics, in the heart of Hitler’s Germany.

Two Portland GRC members, with connections to the local cinema, generously arranged for the private screening, creating a unique experience for the club members.
Hayden Francis said, “We try and organise plenty of social activities for members to take part in but this was the first time that we had a private screening for a movie so it was very exciting for everyone!”
Directed by George Clooney, the film follows a group of working-class boys at the height of the Great Depression. They are thrown into the spotlight for the promise of glory, taking on elite rivals from around the world. Featuring the 1936 Washington Rowing Team, the film represents the hardship faced by the rowing community during that time.
Living up to the anticipation, Hayden Francis from Portland told us, “The film itself was great, and all those that attended had a really enjoyable evening. I would definitely recommend that others go and watch it.”
To conclude the memorable evening, Portland GRC member Andy got down on one knee and proposed to his partner Debbie, also a Portland GRC member. A heartwarming end to an unforgettable evening – congratulations to the happy couple!
