The three Cornish Pilot Gig clubs based on the Ouse in Sussex — Affinity, Newhaven & Lewes — got together this year to organise the first summer regatta in Seaford Bay since 2019.
Eight clubs took part in the regatta, including five visiting clubs: Langstone, Eastney, Tudor, London Cornish and Rowhedge.
Change of plans
The event was originally planned for July, but was postponed until September 9th because of strong winds. The weather was much kinder for the rescheduled event — high temperatures, blue skies and a flat calm sea, although the humidity made conditions for competitors pretty sticky!
To keep things simple, all visiting clubs used gigs owned by the three hosts — next year the plan is to increase the number of gigs competing.
Course and progressions
The event consisted of six ‘points’ races around a classic kite-shaped course of around 2.5km. The day kicked off with Men’s and Women’s Bs, then Men’s and Women’s As, and finished with two races for mixed crews. Points were awarded to clubs according to their placing, with the club with the lowest total at the end of the day winning the ‘Golden Pin’. This was taken by Rowhedge, with Affinity coming a close second and Tudor in third spot.
The day finished with a ‘Challenge Race’ for crews new to racing. Crews from the three host clubs took part, with the Newhaven boat taking first place. For all involved it was a great introduction to the thrills of gig racing.
Navigating a busy harbour
Newhaven is a busy harbour, and the organisers worked closely with Port Control to allow the races to start and finish inside the harbour arm — while avoiding the cross-channel ferry, marine dredger and other water traffic. Seaford sailing club generously provided the safety boats and marker buoys.
Looking ahead to 2024
The three Ouse clubs are already planning another regatta for summer 2024, and welcome entries from any and all gig clubs. Cheap camping spots are available close by for crews travelling from further afield.
