I started rowing in March 2021 with Fowey Gig Club. We are well known club and we’ve been around since 1988. In my first year of gig rowing I was put in the B crew and I’ve worked my way up to the A crew for the U14’s, this year we came 2nd at U14’s and we were super proud of ourselves.
Throughout the entire time I’ve been doing gig rowing I have noticed a lack of juniors and it can be quite frustrating at times when there’s only 1 other boat you’re racing up against and we’d like to see more juniors at regattas. Yes it has started to pick up more but we’d like to every club who attends a regatta with juniors.
If you want to find a water sport, gig rowing is definitely a good option. It’s good for your health, mental health and your physical health. It’s a good way to keep fit and to keep your body in check. But for others it can be a bit of a task fitting it around school times and getting the training hours in. Even if you do live a couple miles from the sea I assure you that it’s a great thing to do.
If you want to do it just for fitness I think you should at least try a minimum of 3 regattas and 1 championship from under 14-16’s categories.
We also have THE MAIN championship which is the Nationals which consists of Cornwall’s best rowers from U15’s to 18’s. I got selected last year and I was so happy and to add the icing on the cake, we won!
Gig rowing is a growing sport from Lands End to Bristol and by the time I’m in my 30’s I’d like to see juniors all over the country doing this sport.
