On May 13th, a crew of eight from Langstone Pilot Gig Club are rowing over 50 miles round the Isle of Wight in memory of long term club supporter, Kath Brett; in support of a friend Andy Syvret & his family; and, via the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, to raise money for MND research.
The fundraising total is being split between two charities:
1. Jemima’s Journey via Tree of Hope – Andy’s daughter Jemima has quadriplegic cerebral palsy. She is a wheelchair user and requires ongoing physiotherapy. The crew are aiming to raise £50,000 towards the cost of a new van capable of carrying both Jemima’s wheelchair and in anticipation of Andy’s needs; and for Jemima’s treatment.
2. My Name’5 Doddie Foundation – the goal is raising £50,000 towards MND support and research via the charity founded by the inspirational Scottish rugby international, Doddie Weir.
You may have had a conversation with the crew at the World Pilot Gig Championships, who spent their time off the water strolling the beach with their fundraising buckets. They were delighted to raise £780.78 from the weekend, which made a healthy contribution towards their fundraising total.
In their effort this week, the crew will be trying to break the gig rowing record of 7hours and 56mins for a circumnavigation of the island. This will mark 10 years since Andy took part in a similar event raising funds for Jemima to travel to the USA for an operation.
