Members and friends of Helford River Gig Club met at Helford Passage on Sunday to take part in the blessing and launch of the club’s new gig, Morgawr, which was led by Rev Johanna Clare.
The gig, built in Fowey by Peter Williams replaces Merthen, and is the newest of five gigs owned by the club. HRGC Chairman, Steve Bagshaw said “She is an exceptionally beautiful gig and now our top racing boat.”
The name Morgawr, Cornish for Sea Giant, and the name of a mystical sea serpent said to live in local waters, was chosen by the membership following a vote.
Work began on the gig last September and was completed in March. The club have been waiting for a lift in Covid restrictions to be able to launch her. In a communal blessing, Rev Johanna encouraged all those present to put a hand on the gig while she blessed her and poured champagne over the bow. Names were drawn from a hat to select the first crew to row in her. This was felt to be a true honour and the lucky rowers took Rev Johanna onboard as passenger for Morgawr’s maiden voyage. Other crews then rowed, with boatbuilder Peter Williams also joining in.
In true Helford style, members and friends then enjoyed fizz and pasties on the beach.
