We are fortunate to have a growing, collaborative rowing community based on the River Ouse.
It was amazing to see members of all 3 local Gig clubs on the water support the filming of “Vindication Swim” last Friday. The producer and director have asked us to pass our thanks on to all involved in producing a truly memorable film shoot. And don’t forget to set your recorder for Wednesday’s (12th May) ITN News at Ten, for a chance to see the Gigs on the water!
We have also been sharing novel ideas on how to work together on maintenance of our beautiful wooden Pilot Gigs, including better ways to support a gig while being worked on and different techniques for stripping off years of paintwork.
‘Isambard’ is a Gig name with a lot of history, and Bristol Pilot Gig Club have understandably asked to retain the name for a future gig, so following a major revamp by Affinity Rowing Club, she has re-emerged as the ferocious Irish Pirate Queen ‘Grace O’Malley’.
‘Amelie’ is the Gig who first brought Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing to Sussex and ultimately inspired the formation of 3 distinct and complementary clubs who call the River Ouse home. During lockdown Newhaven Gig Rowing Club have been working hard to strip the internal paint work ready for sanding and painting.
And we should all welcome the latest addition to Lewes Pilot Gig Club’s flotilla ‘Taran’ – perhaps named for the Celtic god of thunder ‘Taranis’. Time will tell if she is as fast as lightning!
