Langstone Pilot Gig Club organised an event last weekend which was really uplifting and inspiring, considering the Covid lockdown we still find ourselves in.
One club member had the initial idea that members should challenge themselves as a club to see “How Far They Could Go” and to see how many km they could cover over the weekend of 6th/7th March. The idea was for members to get out and about and either walk, run, cycle, swim, paddleboard or use a rowing machine and record the distance covered. They adhered to social distancing and club members went out with their families or with one other club member that they exercise with. Lots of club members have ergs and were challenging themselves to the furthest distance within an hour.
Also a requirement was to send an image of themselves taking part so that they could update social media feeds and keep connected. Jackie Tutt received constant updates from Saturday morning through to midnight Sunday and was kept busy updating their Club Forum, FB and Instagram feeds. It really brought members closer and gave them a shared purpose and it was great seeing each other in the photos on social media.
There was a suggestion that members could make a donation to a charity if they wished to and as the partner of their founder member and first Chairman, Brian West has recently been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease this was the charity that was donated to. The total raised over the weekend for Kath’s Fundraising Page for MND is now over £1800 and rising which is brilliant!
The distance covered over the weekend reached 1021km! This was made up of over 65 members all keeping fit, keeping motivated and supporting and encouraging each other. One member cycled 81km, one swan in the sea for 1km, 3 paddle boarded for 10km between them. Four of their younger members who are away at University contributed from Oxford, Nottingham, Cardiff and Bath and three of their juniors walked around Hayling Island for four hours taking the total over the 1000km mark on Sunday.
Every contribution helped motivate them all and also helped raise funds for a cause that is very close to their hearts.
We challenge other Gig Clubs to beat the total we have set!
