Following the Brixham registered Joanna C fishing boat tragedy, crewed by Newhaven and ex-Newhaven fishermen-Newhaven Gig Rowing Club members Tracy and Rachel (Aunt and Niece) will be undertaking a fundraising rowing challenge for the whole of December (that does include Christmas Day) to help raise money for Newhaven Lifeboat. Between them they will be rowing 3 nautical miles each day, thats 5,400 meters a day; The distance the vessel Joanna C was when she sank off the coast of Newhaven. This will be a total of 93 miles rowed on an ergo (Rowing Machine) or the distance to the French Coast.
The Lifeboat was launched within minutes of the automated distress and after 4 hours one of the crew members was rescued. Sadly, after an intensive search all day Saturday and Sunday by RNLI and many local vessels, 2 of the Joanna C crew members still have not been accounted for.
This has hit our Newhaven community hard. We are a working port with a strong fishing community, where many of us know the crew either as family or friends. Tragic incidents like this really brings reality home and the fact is the sea holds no mercy for even the most experienced crew.
Newhaven Lifeboat will be launched and moving within 10 minutes of any alarm being raised. We have 2 rowing club members directly involved as crew and launch management. The crew face all weather conditions and regularly put their lives at risk to help save others.
Like many of us Tracy and Rachel have family and friends that were on Joanna C. We all know many others that are fishermen in our town and members of the Lifeboat past and present.
As coxswains and rowers for Newhaven Gig Rowing Club Tracy and Rachel also know the risks they face when rowing at Sea. As such they would like to help raise money for the Newhaven Lifeboat by undertaking this rowing challenge on an ergo, whilst others help raise money for the crew members family.
The money will be sent to Newhaven Gig Rowing Club and once completed the club will present Newhaven Lifeboat with the money in the new year.
Newhaven gig rowing club send our condolences to David, and the family and friends of Robert and Adam.
