The club formed in 1996 and developed from people who had rowed for Fowey, Mevagissey and Roseland, but wanted a club in our lovely village. The club has always had a community focus, with very strong local support and an enthusiastic social side. We are on a high at the moment and have a thriving junior section, with our Under 14s doing especially well last year, coming 3rd overall. Our club is centred in Gorran Haven, but we pull in rowers from across the parish and beyond. Gorran is on its own little peninsula, so we tend to attract loyal members, rather than people who move around clubs. We have many families, where all members row or help put and we all go to most regattas and enjoy camping for many weekends. We took thirty rowers and supporters to the Scillies last year and a big group of us camp at Rame, Mounts Bay and Clovelly every year.
The club rows most days throughout the season and every Sunday throughout the year. We also do circuits at Gorran School every Wednesday evening in the winter and organise many fundraising events. Our regatta is one of the big village events and as we have moved from the pubs to the playing field our evening party is very popular on the rowing calendar, with our bands, bale tossing and pork baps. We raised £4000 profit at our 2019 regatta and the community loves the day and evening party. We also organise our village New Year’s Day swim for the RNLI and raised £1000 this year. The club does beach cleaning most weeks and is represented on every parish committee. We have grown in strength, in terms of rowing results, coming 15th at the Helford Mini Scillies this year and our juniors performing superbly well last season. Four of our rowers were also selected for the Cornwall crews last year. However the key source of our strength comes from our extensive community involvement. The vast majority of our members come from our parish and we believe this gives us long term strength; as our juniors grow up we are hopeful to grow stronger and stronger. Gorran is a community club, with huge levels of support locally; we are also delighted that we are doing well and being noticed more on the wider rowing scene too. Ultimately though, our focus is enjoying rowing, having a good time, ensuring lots of partying after rowing and lots of community events. As a village club, we would lose support if we ever started to take ourselves too seriously, but we are hoping for some surprisingly good results in 2020/2021!
