TRIBUTE TO ROGER RYMAN

Roger Ryman

1967 – 2020.

Following previous brewing roles with Maclay and Co, Scotland and Newcastle Brewery, Roger and Toni moved to Cornwall to take the position of Head Brewer at St.Austell Brewery in April 1999. In this position he changed the fortunes of the Brewery launching three flagship beers – Tribute, Proper Job and Korev. In his time at St.Austell Brewery Roger became regarded as a World Class Brewer twice being awarded UK Brewer of the Year title. Roger held an IBD Master Brewer qualification and was elected a Fellow of the Institute in 2014.

Roger was a formidable sportsman enjoying Cycling, Hiking and Rugby, playing for Truro RFC and latterly Bolingey Barbarians RFC Charity Rugby side. He also quickly became involved in Gig Rowing with both Roseland and Charlestown Rowing clubs, successfully competing at many Championship events over the past 20 years. Always one to be up for a challenge and a laugh Roger was instrumental in organising the 2007 Circumnavigation of Cornwall with Charlestown Rowing Club, rowing and pushing their Gig Tormentor around the County over 8 days, helping to raise £14,000 for Charity. He also completed a charitable John O’ Groats to Land’s End cycle ride in 2016. A genuine Club man who gave it his all for the cause and the Community Roger was instrumental in helping Charlestown Rowing Club establish a boat house in the Rashleigh Arms Car Park, Charlestown as well as numerous other club charitable and fund raising events, including Olympic rowers Ed, Coode and Annie Vernon.

Since his involvement with rowing Roger has been a great supporter of our sport and the CPGA, being instrumental in proposing the new Tribute County Gig Championship series as well as being closely involved with the recent formation of the Cornish Barbarians Charitable Rowing Club. Rogers last row was with the Barbarians in 2019.

Our thoughts go out to his wife Toni and their immediate family on Rogers premature death from Cancer, we have all lost a great friend.

Rogers Funeral will take place at 15.00 on Monday 8^th June at Penmount Crematorium Truro, strictly Family only. The Cortege will depart Tregony village at approx. 1.00 and head for St. Austell Brewery followed by Charlestown estimated 14:00-14:10, on the way to the Crematorium. There will be a Rowers Guard of Honour at Charlestown, meet at 1.30 Rashleigh Arms Car park adhering to social distancing guidelines.
