Press Release For Newquays President John Cuthill

Here is a press release from Newquay Rowing Club after their recent sad loss:

It is with great sadness that Newquay Rowing Club announces the passing of our President John Cuthill.  He was Chairman of the club for 25 years until his retirement from that post 2 years ago due to ill health. He had grown up in Newquay and was a rowing member in his younger days returning after University and army service.

His contributions to the club were immense.  He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of gig rowing.  He was responsible for raising the public profile of the club and the sport. Through his other interests he brought people to the club from many organizations.  He received many awards and accolades for his work in preserving the heritage gigs and promotion of gig rowing. As a result of his efforts the club was awarded the Queens award for voluntary service.  In recognition of this award we had a visit from the Duke of Edinburgh in August 2014.

Cup nights in the club  were always a great occasion where John would recount the history of the cup and it’s donor.  He wanted to make sure the history of the club since its foundation in 1921 would not be forgotten.  He was always willing to engage with rowers to discuss the finer points of the race or its history. 

He will be sadly missed but we hope his legacy will live on in the club.  Newquay Rowing Club sends our condolences to the Cuthill family.
