This Saturday,16th June sees an international team entering Falmouth Regatta from Britton (France).
The crew ‘AVIRON RADE2BREST’ comprises of composite crew from around Brittany. These are rowers of Y.C.Brest.Iroise, Brest, Aviron & AR REDERIEN MOR (bourlingueurs) from Plougastel. In the crew we have;
N°1 Srj SANT ELLI
N° 2 Fred LE ROY
N°3 Yann
N°4 Sabine
N°5 Patrick
N°6 Rémi
COX Claude
They are visiting our shores as they have a strong connection and passion for gig rowing and want to keep in contact with their north channel cousins so they are making the trip to Falmouth to compete once again.
Brian Philips, a journalist, introduced the club and two of the team to the World Pilot Gig Championship and they instantly fell in love with it, rowing the Serica. They later retuned as a full club to the WPGC to row in Bonnet, another St Mary’s Gig.
The crew in previous years has also made trips to row in Saltash . This came about as the club has strong ties with Saltash which is twinned with Plougastel, where their crew and club are based. These ties have seen them row in Essa, a Caradon gig.
Back in Brittany, they currently row & train in ‘Soazig’ – Cornish Pilot Gig number 17 and built by Dave Currah.
The crew would love to invite Brian’s wife to the regatta and would love to see her on Gyllingvase Beach to get a drink in memory of Brian. So please do pass this message on if you have any connections, it would be gratefully recieved!
So if you are headed to Falmouth this weekend, make sure you say “Bonjour” to our French cousins and make them feel welcome!
