Tomorrow morning, over 160 gig crews will head towards Saltash to race in the annual Three Rivers Gig Race. Here is some handy information about the popular event run by Caradon Gig Club.
This endurance race is approximately 6 miles long and passes through the Tamar, Tavy & Lynher rivers.
As a very rough estimate, Men’s crews can expect to finish in 40 – 50 minutes and ladies crews in under an hour in favourable conditions

High Tide: 15:19 @ 4.5 m
Low Tide: 21:34 @ 2.1 m
Weather
The forecast has improved over the last 24 hours. Earlier forecast rain is now set to make an appearance later in the day, meaning the ladies’ race at noon is likely to be dry. The wind remains a fairly strong south westerly with gusts up to 30mph which will also affect the real feel temperature. Throughout the afternoon the wind is set to increase with gusts up to 35mph, and light rain forecast to start mid-afternoon.
It’s a cold location, so wrap up warm before and after racing.
The Course
The 6 mile course follows a figure of 8 route, the plot below was taken at the race in 2007.
Starting under the bridge you will have a fresh tail wind pushing you over the line so be ready for this. Crews then row up river in the deep channel. The wind and tide will be running together for this first section. Wind for the first leg will be behind you up and around the starboard channel marker up until the first buoy where it will be side on for the short leg until the next buoy.
After the 2nd buoy turn you will turn to head straight into the wind so get ready as it will be on the nose as you are head back down towards the bridge, against the tide and with the wind, it will be a tough leg until you come nearer the bridge where their will be a brief respite until you are past the sailing club.
From here it is will be a gusty slog down to the final two buoy turns and then you are heading home, with a fresh tail wind and tide and hopefully a little left in the tank.
Summary:
- The wind will be trying to push you over the start line, so be ready to hold up.
- Placings hardly change after the first mark, so it’s all about the first 12 minutes (ish) – just like Scilly. Conditions will be cold, windy and uncomfortable so settle as soon as you can and focus on the first mark.
- Heading back towards the bridge get ready for a long hard leg
