The North Coast Gig League got off to a successful start at Appledore today, organised by Torridge Pilot Gig Club. With the first meeting already having been lost to the weather in November, the forecast gales had caused some concern in the week, but it became apparent that the early start time would save the event from the worst of the impending weather and other than some murky skies conditions were spot on for some great racing.
Racing was set on a slightly shortened version of the usual course out into the estuary, which made for some lively buoy turns to sharpen everyone up so early in the season. With the junior races already called off, eight races took place with nine clubs in attendance. Bristol staked an early claim on the Series Title by bringing an array of strong crews down to the event and picking up an additional five bonus points for five wins. Appledore put in some strong performances and were the pick of the local clubs, taking the honours in the rest of the races.
