Boscastle are happy to welcome Rival back from her holiday at Porlock Weir Gig Club. She went on loan to Porlock Weir for three months in September, in order to help them with the establishment of their club and getting their rowers out on the water, prior to their purchase of their own gig, Circe, which was announced earlier this week.
Rival was built in 1989 by Ralph Bird, and was purchased by Boscastle & Crackington Gig Club in 2007 from Fowey. Most at home on the big seas regularly encountered on the north Cornish coast, she has been the main workhorse at Boscastle for many years until Sport England grant funding enabled the purchase of plastic training gigs in 2013 and 2017.
Last Saturday, in between completing ergo tests for selection, club members turned out to Andy’s Autos in Canworthy Water to get her into a very kindly loaned shed for a very accelerated winter maintenance schedule to begin.
As Boscastle do not have their own gig shed, they are reliant in winter months on kind offers from the local community, and are delighted with this year’s building.
Boscastle kick off their season with the first race of the North Coast Gig Series against nearby rival clubs on 26th January in which they hope to carry on last season’s good form in the season.
