AGM Trade Show – Attendees 20/01/19

On Sunday prior to the AGM there will be a trade show open to everybody. Please find below the list of everyone attending, the trade show will run from 9.30am-12.30pm

St Austell Brewery is home to the South West’s favourite ales and beers and has been brewing locally for over 165 years. Our flagship ale, Tribute, has been proud sponsor of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association for over a decade and we look forward to playing our part in seeing the sport grow even further in the coming years. As another year of racing begins, we raise a glass in all 180 of our award-winning South West pubs and hotels in Tribute to the CPGA and the success of the fabulous sport of gig rowing.

30% of lifejackets inspected by the RNLI would not operate correctly if needed – is yours one of these?
Your lifejacket can be your last line of defence when everything has gone wrong. However, how do you know it will work when you most need it?
The RNLI Community Safety team will be attending the AGM with volunteers that will be able to conduct safety checks on any club lifejackets and give advice free of charge.

Please let us know in advance how many lifejackets you will be bringing so that we can fit everyone in.

Pulling Together the Past is an exciting 18 month project to preserve the heritage of gig rowing for future generations before it is lost. It is vital that this irreplaceable historical material, which is recorded in photographs, documents, film and audio recordings and currently held in diverse locations is preserved.

Falmouth Marine School have been delivering training to the boatbuilding, ship repair and shipbuilding industry since 1920, and has run full time boatbuilding courses since the early 1970’s.

Southwest sky vision

I am a CAA approved drone operator, I provide aerial photography and videos for weddings, social events, sports events, estate agents and I also make promotional videos.
We also specialise in bringing live events to an audience and supporters using switcher studio, this has been used at the Isles of Scillies World Pilot Gig Championships and at Newquay Men’s and Ladies County Championships with great success.

W C Hunkin was first established as a business in 1927 by William Charles Hunkin (Charlie). Originally the business ran as a breakers/salvage yard for breaking up small ships and now several generations later it has evolved into a busy and successful business, building, refurbishing and maintaining quality traditional wooden boats and is still run by members of the same Hunkin family. The current owner – Louis – worked with his father, Maurice, for many years and took over the running of the business when Maurice retired in 2003, although he can often be found at the boatyard, helping out when things are really busy. There is now a next generation learning the ropes as Louis’ nephew, Liam has started work as an apprentice and attends Falmouth marine college once a week to help learn the ropes.
Since taking over the yard Louis has completed the build of a second rowing skiff for St Michael’s rowing club, followed by gigs for Gorran (Vault), The Royal Marines, Plymouth (Gibraltar), Exmouth (Shelley Maid) and the 200th Pilot Gig for Sidmouth – Picket Rock. The next gig to be finished was Q –for Fowey, named after Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch -a very important and well respected literary man from Fowey. We were very honoured to see her named by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall during their visit to Fowey later that year.
Since Fowey’s gig was finished Louis has also gone on to build six more rowing skiff for clubs from the East Coast of Ireland Rowing Association – just finishing another for Stella Maris to join their already successful fleet of W C Hunkin boats as well as fitting out a 16’ Cygnus for a regular customer. There are still several more Irish skiffs in the queue as well as 2 Cornish pilot gigs, filling up the order book until early 2021.

Patrick Bird (aka Kernow Boats) is the son of legendary gig builder Ralph Bird, and has been living and breathing gigs all his life.
He now builds gigs underneath the iconic Richmond Bridge, which many of you will have rowed under whist attending the London Great River Race.
Kernow Boats also carries out refurbishments and refitting, having repaired Cream of Cornwall, Rapparee, Golden Gear, Bedehaven and Chesil this winter.
Since building Hurricane for (Bishops Stortford) and Valkyrie (for Rowhedge) , Patrick is now building his third gig which will be raced by London Cornish at the World Pilot Gig Championships.

Now a separate entity, Kernow Boats (Oars) Ltd has made oars for most of the gig clubs.
Laminated with a unique combination of timber, the balance, stiffness, comfort and power of Kernow Boats Oars has been refined to provide the oar of choice.
Last year, Caradon ladies won the World Pilot Gig Championships and their men won Newquay Championships with our oars, with many of the other crews in the top groups also rowing our oars.
