At last year’s World Championship’s the crew rowing the gig ‘Heart of Hayling’ were hampered in a qualifying race when the forward portion of her keel band broke loose and quickly created a massive artificial sea anchor made of seaweed.
The buckled portion of the stainless-steel band was removed by the Langstone bosun Matt Walton before the next seeding race.
Last week the Langstone Pilot Gig Club held a Christmas Dinner Dance and silent action and members were reunited with the keel strip.
Matt Walton had cut up the keel strip and transformed them into a series of Key Rings, each numbered and engraved as photographed, resulting in a combined action sale value of more than £300 for the club.
Who bought the first 6 key rings? The original Scilly’s crew members, who else.
