The Red Rock League was established last winter for all clubs based in South Devon. From East to West, this includes Sidmouth, Exmouth, Teign, Paignton, Brixham, Dart, Salcombe, Cattewater and Tamar and Tavy. Sidmouth and Exmouth are lucky enough to be involved in both the Red Rock League and the Jurassic League.
League categories include Men’s and Ladies A, B and veteran crews, Under 16s, Under 14s and Mixed as well as an overall club.
The eligible events include the regattas of league clubs that are able to host all other league clubs at their home regatta (Teign, Paignton, Salcombe and Cattewater) as well as 3 Rivers, Scillies, Under 16s Championships and Newquay Mens and Ladies Cornwall County Championships.
With just the Newquay events left to go there are confirmed results for several categories as these crews are now unassailable in their positions! But the results of the Men’s A, Men’s B and Ladies B will come down to the outcome at Newquay.
Ladies A – Teign
Mens Vets – Cattewater
Ladies Vets – Cattewater
Mixed – Dart
Under 16s – Brixham
Under 14s – Brixham
Ben Banks, who sent in this report says “There is a planned presentation evening hosted by our sponsor Red Rock Brewery towards the end of the year. This has been a building year for the league and interest has been growing as the season progresses. Next year the hope is to have a live league scoreboard at the league events and that clubs will look to focus their training and selection with the league in mind”
Ben explains that “The aim of the league is to encourage high attendance at local regattas right through each class, to encourage a greater sense of competition and excitement in races and to push the standard and competitiveness of South Devon Gig Rowing to a higher level. Much of the racing between the leagues clubs has been very close with the Men’s A, Men’s B and Ladies B results all going to the last round at Newquay.”
GigRower looks forward to hearing the final results after the County Championships and to the league’s progression next season.
