Details of an ‘Epic Row’ in a Cornish Pilot Gig, by a Wounded, Injured and Sick (WIS) veterans crew, have been released.
The journey will start on Saturday 2nd April from the National Maritime Museum, Falmouth at 3pm and the first leg will take the crew to Helford where there will be an evening celebration in The Ferryboat Inn. This format will be repeated until the gig reaches the Isles of Scilly, with planned stops including Coverack, Cadgwith, Porthleven, Marazion, Sennen and St. Mary’s.
The Wounded Veterans gig build project involves WIS personnel working with a team of expert boat builders led by Andrew Nancarrow.
This is a project, core funded by the Armed Forces Community Covenant Grant Scheme and National Maritime Museum Cornwall which has offered WIS volunteers work in building a Cornish Pilot Gig. As the build comes to its conclusion, the gig will then be handed to rowers to take her across to the Isles of Scilly in time for the 2016 Pilot Gig World Championships. The Help for Heroes Gig team, will then compete in her, during the Championships.
The Epic Row is sponsored by St Austell Brewery and supported by the Royal British Legion so there will be plenty of partying opportunities at each overnight stop. Everyone is welcome to join in and Pub landlords are planning entertainment of some format at each stage.
It is hoped that the gig club closest to the venue will be able to provide members to assist with the recovery and launch of the gig and that rowers will support the evening events.
