Coverack Gig Club, one of the best known gig clubs in Cornwall, is about to hold its largest ever fund raising event, this Saturday, April 18th, outside the White Hart, St Keverne. The event has attracted some sensational items for auction, worth many thousands of pounds, including a cap signed by Lewis Hamilton.
Trevor Richards, Grants and Fundraising Co-ordinator, says: ‘Gig racing is very special and we want to get more young people involved in the activity, to help safeguard the future of gig racing.’
The event will see the blessing of two new training skiffs, Sophie and Kirsty, from 3pm in the afternoon and will be followed by a disco and an auction of items.
The auction includes:
- Original Vodafone McLaren cap, hand signed by Lewis Hamilton
- Original Abba LP album ‘Greatest Hits’ 1979 hand signed by all four members of Abba
- ‘Chef’s Table’ lunch for 6 at Gordon Ramsay’s Restaurant in Claridge’s Hotel, London
- Original Mathew Pincent wins third gold in the coxless fours in 2000, hand signed by Mathew Pincent.
As well as the Kingfisher CY15 training skiffs, Sophie and Kirsty, the club’s 32 foot fibreglass training gig, Future, will also be blessed at the afternoon event, which will include a BBQ and stalls.
The two new skiffs, together with their trailers, paddles and Concept 2 indoor rowing machine were part funded by Kerrier District Council, Our Money Your Dream and St Keverne Parish Council. Future was part funded by Cornwall Community Foundation (Grassroots). St Deny’s Masonic Lodge has also funded an outboard motor which can be used on either of the training skiffs, making them into safety boats.
Trevor Richards says: “We are thrilled to have these three new boats. Now we can attract more young rowers and they will be able to spend more time out on the water, improving their skills and performance. The auction will raise further funds so we can make even more improvements at the club. Today is about ensuring a bright future for gig racing”.
