Flushing & Mylor Pilot Gig Club have just put the first batch of 12 club rowers through their new, purpose made, ‘Gig Coxing Course’.

The course was split into two sections, classroom theory and on water practical.

The theory classes were run by club rower and RYA instructor Ali Johns and covered charts and publications, safety, buoyage, tidal awareness, basic navigation and pilotage, rules of the road, electronic navigation, anchoring, weather forecasts and passage planning.  All those who attended were awarded RYA ‘Basic Navigation and Safety’ certificates at the end of the course.

The on-water training involved a full day out on the water run by ex GBR coach Penny Chuter OBE.  The course covered:

The Roles of a Cox
Safety & Risk Management
Lifting, Launching & Landing
Steering and Manoeuvring
Commands and Communication
Coaching Technique
Interpreting Training Sessions
