The date for the 2009 Great River Race has been announced.
This year the 2 mile race will be held on September 5th, however due to this years tide time the race will be run from East to West.
The famous race is a spectacular event attracting around 300 crews (And many Gigs) from all over the globe and appealing to every level of competitor from those who enjoy fun, fancy dress and charity stunts, to serious sports men and women who like to win. A great fun day out for competitors and spectators alike.
From its debut in 1988, The Great River Race now has firmly established itself in the sporting calendar to such an extent that experienced crews describe it as a classic event – the one they all want to win.
And with its intriguing mix of colour, spectacle, intense competition and casual fun, it combines all the ingredients that made London’s ‘other’ marathon such a success; but with the addition of dozens of new photo opportunities as the race progresses from semi-rural Surrey past many historic landmarks until it reaches the striking Docklands skyline.
The Great River Race attracts both the true racer and the leisure rower and, in developing into ‘London’s River Marathon’, is doing for rowing what the ‘Road Marathon’ did for running. Not surprising when the course is a gruelling 22 miles from Richmond to London docklands.
