Tamar/Tavy Pilot Gig Club, Cornwall
Established: 2002
Location: Tavistock
Gigs: Tamar, Ginette
About: The Tamar and Tavy Pilot Gig Club was founded on the river Tavy on the Bere Peninsular in 2002. Brian Nobbs, an experienced shipwright, offered to build us a gig for free if we supplied the materials and labour and in 2003 he went on to build our first gig, Ginette, named after his wife and daughter.
The club has steadily grown and by 2007 we reached 120 members. Brian was again commissioned to build ‘Tamar’ who was launched on the 8th March 2008. We row every day of the week and when we identified the need for a further gig, we turned to our local community for funding towards our ‘plastic’ gig and ‘Belinda O’Flynn’, named after the Trusts founder, was launched in 2010
We now participate in a wide range of rowing events from the Tribute series, as well as endurance events such as the Great London River Race. We were also honoured to take part in the Thames River Pageant for the Diamond Jubilee in 2012
