GigRower Memories

One of the great things about our sport and gig rowing is its strong sense of community.  People involved around Gig Rowing are connected not just through our shared love of the boats and racing, but also through a shared set of values.

We set up this page as a place to remember rowers of the past. As well as listing the death it’s also a chance for rowers to add a comment, a way for them to pay their respects when often they don’t know the rower well enough to attend the funeral.

So if you would like us to list a death on GigRower then please email info@gigrower.co.uk with the name of the rower, their age, date of their passing, at least one photo, as well as summary of their life. We will then post it on the website, share it on facebook and open it for comments where rowers can pay their respects or add a short story or memory. All comments are moderated by the GigRower team so nothing rude, disrespectful or contentious will be posted. You must have permission from the direct family before you contact us and we will want to check this before we publish so please provide details.

Regards,

Dedicated to the memory of Gwen Christian

It is with great sadness that the death of Gwen Christian has been announced.

Gwen joined Porthleven gig club shortly after its formation and then started rowing flashboats in 1997 for Penryn.

In 2001 she was delighted to be a co-owner of Morlader which was used by Penryn, and became Ladies Vet Champions at Scillies in 2001 and 2002. Her flashboat rowing was similarly successful, being Ladies Four Oar champions in 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, Ladies Cornish randan champion 2005, 2006, and not out of the top 3 places, in both disciplines, for a period of 13 years.

She travelled the world competing in gigs in Boston USA, and in Holland, where she won twice.

She became a Level 2 coach and spent many hours coaching junior and senior rowers.

Her last race was the Three Rivers in March 2018, 2 days before her diagnosis of oesophageal cancer. She spent the next 5 years undergoing gruelling treatment and spending time with her children, and especially her grandchildren, to whom she was devoted.

Her sunny personality, beautiful smile and wry sense of humour are much missed.
Gwen’s ashes will be scattered on the water off Trelissick , on Sunday 16 July approx 09.45.
Boats at Turnaware at 09.30. All welcome, contact Penryn at penrynrowing@gmail.com if you wish to row across and don’t have a boat.

Remembering Terry Teague

Remembering Terry Teague

Terry – barrel chested, teak hard, ex miner. Body shaped similar to a firkin of Doombar bitter and rumoured to contain a similar amount of the amber nectar. Bald of pate, generous nature with a smile the width of the Carrick Roads. On and off the water, a fighting spirit allied to steely determination. Dominates company with infectious laugh and back slapping physicality. Up for anything and expects the same of others! Long time captain and boatmaster. The spirit and soul of the club.
