Bridport Pilot Gig Club, Dorset
Location: West Bay, Bridport, Dorset
In 2007 a group of like-minded people had a vision to set up a gig rowing club in Bridport. They had no money, no boat, oars, members and certainly no ‘club’; however, after a few months of fundraising and promoting, the club became a reality: consisting of 50 eager members ready to have a real bash at making BGRC a successful community project…
In 2016, we are now a fully-fledged gig rowing club with 130+ members, a GRP gig; Bucky Doo and two wooden racing gigs; Dagger (bought from new) and Blaez (formerly Salcombe’s ‘Wolf’, bought by Bridport two years ago). We have now moved into a new boathouse, which stores two of our gigs and all our equipment, with a kitchen, toilet and storage in the roof. We operate out of West Bay harbour, and row in Lyme Bay. When the weather does not permit rowing from the bay, we take our gigs to Portland Marina where flatter, sheltered water can sometimes be found!
We have a healthy balance of general rowers and squad rowers, who can be found rowing most days of the week. The squad is continually growing…we currently have ladies A, B, C and vets crews and men’s A, B and vets crews. Our junior crew is very successful year on year, and enjoy competing at regattas, where they often grab a win or two! We have lots of social and fundraising events throughout the year, and hope to buy a new boat in the next year which will allow the club to continue to grow in size and success.
