Formed in 2017, Torpoint Rowers Club is one of the newest gig rowing clubs in the UK, and Saturday 25th August 2018 marked a major milestone in the club’s short history as they took ownership of their first wooden pilot gig – a move that will allow them to become a full CPGA member and enable them to take part in many more competitive events.
The club have purchased the much-loved Lantic from River Fowey Gig Club. Lantic was completed in 2003 and was the first gig to be built by Maurice and Louis Hunkin. Since then, she has been one of the most universally praised boats on the circuit, and even at 15 years of age is still a highly competitive racing boat.
Torpoint raced Lantic throughout Saturday’s event, which forms part of the Royal Fowey Regatta Week, and they enjoyed notable success in the U14 race in which they came a highly respectable 4th out of 8 boats.
The club will be racing at both the Men’s and Ladies events at Newquay this September, the Winter League, and the 2019 World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles Of Scilly next year.
