On 24th February, rowers from across the South West gathered on a unique world stage for the inaugural World Indoor Gig Rowing Championships at the Eden Project in Cornwall.
Kicking off with the U16 Junior rounds in the morning, the day, and the Mediterranean biome warmed up to witness the amazing spectacle of the mixed relay and the finals of the individual rounds. Goran Gig Club attended with Vault, showcasing the heritage of the sport, while sponsors Snap Fitness and St Michael’s Hotel and Spa ran events to row the length of the Panama in the Rainforest Biome and compete for prizes.
In the true spirit of the Cornish sport, St Austell Brewery sponsored the event with each competitor bagging a free beer and a pasty. One rower from Mayflower Offshore, commented: “It was a truly great event and a good chance to meet some hardy sea rowers.”
Thanks go to Eden Project for initiating such a spectacular event and all who made the day such a success. We hope it will return in 2019!
